A hydraulic filter press operates in a batch process, where slurry is pumped into the system, and solid-liquid separation takes place through pressure filtration. In each of the filtration cycle, slurry is filled into the press, and solids are separated in the form of a filter cake. This process is repeated for continuous operation. By applying high pressure, the system improves filtration speed and produces a filter cake with lower moisture content, making it ideal for industries like mining, chemicals, ETP, marble, and iron ore processing.
A filter press is made up of multiple chambers that are made by a series of square filter plates and is held within a strong steel frame. Slurry is pumped into these chambers, where filtration takes place under a specified set of pressure.
The plates are tightly pressed together using a hydraulic system, that is leak-proof and offers consistent performance. Each plate is fitted with a filter cloth that captures solid particles while allowing the liquid (filtrate) to pass through.
As filtration continues, the solids build up on the cloth and form a dense filter cake. This layer can even trap finer particles, and result in a cleaner filtrate.
The filtered liquid, also known as the filtrate, gets out through the filter press outlets but in a much cleaner form. This filtrate can either be reused in the process or safely discharged, depending on what are the further requirements.
Once the filtration cycle is complete, the accumulated filter cake is removed from the chambers. The process can be operated in automatic or semi-automatic mode, which means there is little chance of manual intervention and flaws.
As the filter cake builds up inside the chambers, the pressure inside increases because the liquid has to pass through the cake layer. This gradually slows down the flow of the filtrate.
At this stage, the feed pump works on and off, and the filtration process becomes slower until it reaches the set pressure or cycle time. Once that point is reached, the cycle ends and the filter cake is discharged.
