Filter presses normally run in a “batch” manner. They are filled with slurry ahead of finishing a filtering cycle and processing a batch of solid filtered material, called the filter “cake”. The solid is extracted, the press refilled with slurry and the filtering cycle repeated. A filter press uses improved pressure to bump up the rate of filtration and manufacture a final filter cake with a moderate water content.

At a pre-determined filtration time or pressure being achieved the cycle is ended and the fully formed filter cake is released.
